Thank you for visiting DC Healthy Green Families!

This is the beginning of a project to connect people seeking healthy resources to the centers, studios, practitioners, events, places, and groups that will teach them what they need to nourish themselves and their families.

DC Healthy Green Families is something I’ve dreamed of creating for years. In 2008, a woman about to move to DC from Seattle asked me about resources for mindful parenting and healthy living. I pointed her in the direction of the Arlington/Alexandria chapter of Holistic Moms Network I was about to start, but I also knew she needed more. So I began a small list of resources (mostly email lists) and called it Crunching Through Nova. Since then, I’ve pointed several newcomers — or newbies to holistic living — to that little site, but it just doesn’t cut it. It’s quaint, though, don’t you think?

I’ve wanted to expand that little launch pad many times over, and that’s what I plan to do with this site.

I would love to partner with practitioners and studios and other holistic-minded businesses who would like to advertise so that this project can become something that sustains my family. A business plan is in the works, and I’m open to collaboration.

So who am I? My name is Jessica Claire Haney. I’m a former teacher and a freelance writer Headshot 2012and editor living in Northern Virginia. But mostly I’m a mom trying to figure out how to keep myself healthy and raise a healthy family. My husband and I have two young children and a recently renovated house that could be considered our third. That would make the novel I’m working on something like an immaculately conceived fourth. Like everything else around here, it, too, has had a long gestation.

The tagline of my personal blog — Crunchy-Chewy Mama — is “Living naturally most of the time,” and the masthead photo conveys the reality of life in the metro DC area: where the wilderness meets the sidewalk.

Fair warning: This project has taken six years of mulling to even begin to execute, and although I tend to get a lot of things done, I also have to take care of my health and my children’s health as my top priority. That can take a lot of time, especially in summer. So if I don’t reply immediately to every comment or email, please assume that I am living by the law of the Universe making things happen whenever it is the right time for them to happen.

If a time delay doesn’t bother you, please send suggestions and connections! I do look forward to your help to build this resource! Contact me at DCHealthyGreenFamilies (at) gmail (dot) com

When my children go back to school in the fall, things can get serious. For now, I’ll share what I just can’t keep to myself!

To health!
